On Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at a scheduled Public Hearing held at the Sunrise Civic Center, the Broward Legislative Delegation unanimously elected State Senator Gary Farmer as Chair for the 2018 Legislative Year.
Senator Farmer represents Senate District 34 which covers the entire east coast of Broward County, FL. He is a second year legislator and served as the Delegation’s Vice Chair during his first year in the legislature under House Democratic Leader Pro Tempore, Representative Bobby DuBose. Representatives Kristin Jacobs and Richard Stark nominated. Senator Farmer is an avid Florida State Seminoles fan and is an Attorney, Founding Partner of Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos and Lehrman, P.L.
During this same hearing, State Representative Richard Stark was unanimously elected Vice Chair of the Broward Legislative Delegation. Representative Stark represents the citizens of House District 104. Representatives Joe Geller and Barrington Russell called for his nomination during the Wednesday full day public hearing. Representative Stark’s district covers portions of west Broward County and includes Weston, Pembroke Pines, and Southwest Ranches. Rep. Stark is the Founder of Stark & Associates, an insurance and financial services agency.
A third position was filled on that day as the Members accepted the recommendation for new Delegation Counsel and welcomed Constitution Review Commissioner and former Delegation member Senator Chris Smith. This position had been previously held by Eugene Steinfeld, Esq., who served as Counsel for 34 years.
The Public Hearing was a scheduled, full-day event to hear from the Broward’s Constitutional Officers, as well as the public and Broward agencies, and to hear local bills. The elections were originally scheduled for September 7th but were postponed due to Hurricane Irma.
